If you answered YES to any of these questions you may be one of the many suffering from Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMD).
The TMJ is one of the most complex joints in the body. It is constructed of two bones. The mandible (jaw), and the temporal bone of the skull. A disc sits in the middle of the two bones. Disorders of this joint are very common.
What if my jaw “Clicks/ Pops” but it doesn’t hurt?
Clicking in the jaw indicates that the disc between the mandible and temporal bone is out of place. This creates bone on bone contact and over time can lead to arthritic changes in the TMJ. Arthritic changes will reduce the overall function of the TMJ resulting in pain. Early intervention restores normal alignment and function of the joint, thereby creating a nutritious environment for the disc.
At Physionorth we have experienced Physiotherapists who are highly qualified to assess, diagnose and treat TMJ disorders. Our professional background and experience have allowed us to develop a multidisciplinary program based on individual needs and findings. Our physiotherapists are trained to perform specialised release techniques, mobilisations and individual exercises in order to reduce pain and restore normal function of the TMJ. Based on individual findings, treatment may also address neck disorders and postural education.
